ESPN: MUSIC for JANUARY 2017

I've always loved the montages that would play on ESPN, where the editors would take exciting clips and piece them together with a great piece of music.

So you can imagine how excited I was when I found out that THREE of my songs, [ "Evolution," "Coming For You," and "Fever" ] were chosen to be a part of their music "pool" for January 2017. What this means is that for the whole month my songs,  among others, will be available for unlimited use. I've already seen it used twice, once for an NBA piece and once for an NFL piece, and I nearly lost my shit.

Couldn't have ask for a better way to start 2017!!

Nuela Charles: The Grand Hustle

When this Edmonton-based soul singer entered CBC's Searchlight contest in 2013, her song Unfortunate Love attracted a lot of attention.

It also won her the inaugural Edmonton Music Prize. Now she's back with a full-length follow-up in a style she describes as "cinematic soul."

FYI News: Track of the Day

Nuela Charles - "Fever (Independent) No, this is not a version of the Peggy Lee classic, but is an original track on The Grand Hustle, the just-released second album from this soulful singer/songwriter.

Charles explains that “'Fever' was written out of a moment of frustration, and sometimes out of frustration we run. We run away from something, or we run to something. The video represents us all. With the direction of Steven Hope, we were able to capture a sense of urgency, emotion and togetherness, which I feel like is needed now more than ever. "

The neatly-crafted and well-produced cut strikes us as having real airplay potential.

The Edmonton-based Charles was a 2011 and 2013 Western Canadian Music Award nominee for Urban Recording of the Year. She first made a major mark with 2012 debut album Aware, a disc that found favour with the CBC and earned TV placements on VH1, MTV, Showtime, and more.

Look for her new material to also receive a warm reception. Charles describes The Grand Hustle as "the result of four very transformative years. Through discovery, love, loss, and recovery I have learned to fight for what I want."

Charles plays the Needle Vinyl Tavern in Edmonton on Nov. 26.
